The future of GAIM will be dominated by Earth System Analysis and development of global biogeochemical models. However, certain key issues still remain that can enhance the scientific basis for such models. As more sophisticated models are developed for the Earth System, the weak links in our conceptual understanding come to light and it becomes necessary to explore these in detail. As such, key issues will be explored in the coming years through focused GAIM activities. Such issues include development of a 300-year land use data set, in conjunction with LUCC, and the role of deforestation in the global carbon cycle, among others.
