Understanding and Explaining Specific Observations
of the Earth System

The 'Analysis' part of the GAIM Acronym involves identification of specific problems and gaps in our understanding of critical aspects of the Earth System. This includes finding explanations for the growing set of system-level observations being obtained through geological and instrumental techniques. The necessary conceptual understanding of the processes that control the behavior of the Earth System can only be gained by multidisciplinary approaches to unravel the complex set of interactions within the system that would not be evident from disciplinary studies. Consequently, GAIM continues to identify specific observations at the system level, the explanations for which require a deeper understanding of the Earth System than exists at present.
