IGBP Projects

ESSP Joint Projects

IGBP Projects

IGBP is now implementing its research under a new scientific structure of six projects and two integrating activities. The projects are centred on the three major Earth System compartments – ocean, land and atmosphere – and the interfaces between them, with PAGES and GAIM providing the integrative system perspective. Some projects under the earlier IGBP structure are working towards their completion dates and will continue to operate for the next 1-2 years. This section contains contact information for all active IGBP projects, under both the new and old structures.

Each project is guided by a Scientific Steering Committee (SSC), which undertakes the detailed planning and implementation. SSC membership rotates annually with three-year terms of appointment, once renewable. Over 200 scientists from the international global change research community are directly involved in the planning and implementation of IGBP research.

Each IGBP Project is supported by an International Project Office (IPO), whose staff coordinate and facilitate the Project's work on a full-time basis. The network of IPOs and the IGBP Secretariat together form the basic infrastructure that supports IGBP's research activities.

ESSP Joint Projects

The Earth System Science Partnership (ESSP), the partnership of the four global change research programs IGBP, IHDP, WCRP, and DIVERSITAS, is undertaking four joint projects with the aim of building a global change-oriented research agenda of direct relevance for societies. In brief, these projects aim to elucidate the additional challenges caused by global change for carbon/energy, food, water and health, and to understand the implications of human-driven changes in these systems for the functioning of the Earth System. The joint projects are thus designed to directly address the two-way interaction between global change and global sustainability issues.

Global Carbon Project (GCP)

The research goal of the GCP is to develop comprehensive, policy-relevant understanding of the global carbon cycle, encompassing its natural and human dimensions and their interactions.

Global Environmental Change and Food Systems (GECAFS)

The goal of GECAFS is to determine strategies to cope with the impacts of global environmental change on food provision systems and to analyse the environmental and socioeconomic consequences of adaptation.

Global Water System Project (GWSP)

The overarching scientific question addressed by the GWSP is how are humans changing the global water cycle, the associated biogeochemical cycles, and the biological components of the global water system, and what are the social feedbacks arising from these changes?

Global Change and Human Health (in development)

The objective of the joint health project is to understand better the multi-faceted and complex linkages between global change (including climate change, land and sea use changes, global biodiversity loss and changes, global socio-economic changes) and human health. The project's Planning Team have recently presented the Implementation Plan.
